Transitive and Intransitive Verbs

  • the verb stands alone (= it doesn’t have any object) – intransitive verb
    • examples of intransitive verbs (in dictionaries they are marked I): The vase is broken. My friend arrived.
  • the verb has an object – transitive verb
    • examples of transitive verbs (in dictionaries they are marked T): He looked at me. The team still hasn’t scored.
